Breast Lift Surgery – Preparing For the Surgery

A breast lift is a great way to restore your chest to its pre-pregnancy, or even pre-aging body. The procedure will remove excess skin and help sagging, drooping, limp breasts to regain firmness and a younger shape.

Once you have decided to undergo the cosmetic surgery, you will need to do all you can to prepare yourself for the procedure, make the best informed decisions and to make the recovery as comfortable as possible.

* Schedule a Consultation

After you have decided to have a breast lift and have found the right plastic surgeon, you will be scheduled for pre-surgery consultation to clarify all your doubts and answer all your questions and make some decisions specific to your procedure. For example, the surgeon will explain exactly what will take place during the surgery and discuss with you different surgical techniques and which one will be the best for you.

* Choosing a Surgical Method

While the goal of all breast lift techniques is to remove excess skin and lift up the breasts, each method has its pros and cons. The standard breast lift procedure involves an incision around the areola and down the breast and along the crease under the breast. This creates the most obvious scars, but can correct the most dramatic drooping.

Another possible method is the peri-areolar or doughnut breast lift. This creates an incision only around the areola and the scars are often well concealed along the edge of the areola. You will also need to decide whether you want to have implants inserted during your surgery as well. This is a very common combination procedure but you will need to decide whether to go with saline or silicone implants and whether to have them inserted above or below the pectoral muscles.

* Two Weeks to Surgery

This consultation will be the time when your surgeon tells you what you will need to do during the two week prior to your operation. If you are a smoker certainly you will be expected to have quit smoking at least two weeks beforehand.

Most doctors will also recommend that you refrain from drinking alcohol during those two weeks as well. And because breast lifts require some incisions and result in some bleeding, you will probably be advised to stop taking drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen that thin your blood and would make it harder for you to heal after your surgery. For the same reason you may also be asked to stop taking any extra vitamin E supplements two weeks before the surgery.

* The D-Day

You should arrange for someone to bring you home from your surgery as you will be recovering from anesthesia and won’t be able to drive for a while. You will also need someone to stay and care for you during the next one to two days while you go through the toughest part of the recovery period.

Be sure to ask your surgeon any questions you have as they come up, as you may not have them all formed in your mind when you meet for the consultation. It is best to do all you can to be as prepared mentally and physically for your breast lift as possible!
